The video registration of the Economia Symposium for Non-Economists is now available online. 19th of October 2020 the final presentation of this year’s interdisciplinary design course ‘District’ at the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam took place.

Invited by the head of urbanism, Markus Appenzeller, the class of Mathias was focusing on the city as an ecosystem, and the Master students designed a district that in particular contributes to one of the four groups of ecosystem services.

On the 30th of September 2020 the award ceremony of the 2020 BLASt Prize took place in Breda. Mathias was invited to take on the role of host and to present the finalists and the winner: The Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) by Inbo architecs and Culd landscape architects. As elderwoman Marianne de Bie put it: “This award ceremony is crucial to stimulate the development of spatial quality in Breda, and to involve a large audience when it comes to architecture”. The ceremony was live on TV and a recording is available online.

On September 23rd, 2020 Mathias speaks on Social Value on the conference ‘Value in Architecture’ organized by Deutsche Bundesarchitektenkammer Berlin and Netzwerk Architektur Export.

Early September 2020 Vereniging Deltametropool published an article by Mathias on Values in Spatial Planning. This blog summarizes the most important aspects of the ‘Value This! Conference’ organized by Vereniging Deltametropool and the International Department of the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects.

On 9/11 2020 Mathias was speaking at the Online Festival on Economy without Economists organized by Eindhoven based Baltan Laboratories. Invited by co-speaker, researcher and economist Dan Diojdescu Mathias focussed on the city as an urban ecosystem and on the benefits of ecosystem services.

In his role as Co-Initiator and Research Director of the platform nextcity.nl Mathias Lehner published the second edition of the ‘First Guide to Nature Inclusive Design’ in 2019. Also, a Dutch version of this ‘Eerste gids voor natuurinclusief ontwerp’ is available. The book features theories, examples and (student) plans of the research heas has been carrying out since 2014 with Maike van Stiphout. Find out more.

From September 2020 onwards Mathias will teach architecture, landscape and urbanism students at the Academy of Architecture Amsterdam. His course – P3 AUL ‘District’ – will focus on an urban plan for the Central Market Area in Amsterdam that is designed as an urban ecosystem delivering free ecosystem services and resulting in high density, and at the same time high quality of life. Mathias is part of the urbanism team, headed by MLA+ director Markus Appenzeller.

Upon invitation of Vereniging Deltametropool Mathias will speak on 28th of August 2020 about Economic, Social and Ecologic Value and the relation of architects’ work to the UN SDGs. Join online!
