In our time of the Anthropocene mankind has put a mark on the planet, and many global urgencies can be experienced in urban areas, where most of the global population will live, work and recreate. But how can ever growing cities handle the pressure, and ensure Quality of Life?

Sustainability for me starts with ‘Quality of Life in the City’. Next to smart and circular solutions I am looking at the city as an ecosystem. With strengthening this natural, urban ecosystem we can create sustainable solutions in an integral way.

Dealing cities as part of an ecosystem, we might harvest a palate of free ecosystem services. From fine dust reduction and buffering heavy rains to tempering ‘urban heat islands’ and increasing urban biodiversity. In short, a city of the future: the Next City

nextcity.nl is an initiative and platform that looks at cities as ecosystems and promotes designing and building nature inclusive. There is a free ‘First Guide to Nature Inclusive Building’ available online and as print, and there were exhibitions at the HNI, Dutch Design Week and the Venice Biennale.
